Toyota and Lexus sold 10.16 million vehicles worldwide in calendar 2024. That scale sits alongside important differences in definitions: Toyota brand figures are not the same as consolidated Toyota Motor Corporation figures, which include Daihatsu and Hino. Toyota also defines worldwide sales as inside-Japan sales plus outside-Japan sales, while outside-Japan definitions vary by country or region.

Global Toyota sales scale and annual totals
The clearest starting point is the difference between the Toyota brand and the consolidated group. Toyota brand worldwide sales were 9,615,157 vehicles in 2021, up 10.6% year over year, and 9,566,961 in 2022, down 0.5%. These figures cover the Toyota brand worldwide, rather than every vehicle sold by Toyota Motor Corporation. The official annual results are reported in Sales, Production, and Export Results for 2021 and Sales, Production, and Export Results for 2022.
The consolidated totals were higher: 10,495,548 vehicles worldwide in 2021, up 10.1%, and 10,483,024 in 2022, down 0.1%. Consolidated figures include Toyota, Daihatsu, and Hino, so they should not be used as a direct substitute for Toyota-brand sales. Toyota’s global sales also fell 10.5% year over year in 2020, showing how a single annual total can conceal substantial changes between periods.
| Measure | Period | Sales | Change | Scope |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Toyota brand worldwide | 2021 | 9,615,157 | +10.6% | Toyota brand |
| Toyota brand worldwide | 2022 | 9,566,961 | -0.5% | Toyota brand |
| Consolidated worldwide | 2021 | 10,495,548 | +10.1% | Toyota, Daihatsu, and Hino |
| Consolidated worldwide | 2022 | 10,483,024 | -0.1% | Toyota, Daihatsu, and Hino |
Toyota’s fact sheet reports global consolidated sales of 48 trillion yen in fiscal 2024. This is a financial sales measure, not a vehicle-count measure, and fiscal 2024 should not be treated as interchangeable with calendar 2024. Annual figures may also be revised in detailed Excel data, according to Toyota’s notes.
Factual callout: Toyota and Lexus recorded 10.16 million worldwide vehicle sales in calendar 2024, while the 2021 and 2022 consolidated totals include Daihatsu and Hino. Always identify the brand scope before comparing totals. (Sales Volume in 2024)
Regional distribution and changing market reach
Toyota and Lexus sales in calendar 2024 were distributed across several large markets. Japan accounted for 1.44 million vehicles, Asia for 3.21 million, North America for 2.73 million, Europe for 1.17 million, and other regions for 1.61 million. Toyota presents these regional totals rounded to two decimal million vehicles, so they are best read as rounded geographic indicators rather than as a fully precise reconciliation. The figures come from Sales Volume in 2024.
The longer regional mix series shows how Toyota’s market reach changed between 2005 and 2023. Japan represented 24% of global sales mix in 2005 and 16% in 2023. North America moved from 35% to 25%, while Europe moved from 14% to 11%. China increased from 3% in 2005 to 19% in 2023. Asia and emerging markets represented 25% in 2005 and 29% in 2023. These are mix shares for the named years, not growth rates or vehicle counts. Toyota’s Sales Breakdown by Region reports the regional shares as whole percentages.
The comparison is useful because it separates scale from composition. A region can remain a major source of sales while accounting for a smaller share of a larger worldwide base. Conversely, China’s share rose substantially in the reported mix even though the source does not provide a corresponding 2005-to-2023 vehicle-count series in this dataset.
Japan sales, registrations, and market share
Japan results vary depending on whether minivehicles are included. In 2021, Toyota Japan sales including minivehicles were 1,476,136 vehicles, with a 33.2% market share. Excluding minivehicles, sales were 1,440,716 vehicles, with a 51.5% market share. The difference in denominator and vehicle coverage is therefore central to interpreting Toyota’s position in Japan.
In 2022, sales including minivehicles fell to 1,289,132 vehicles, down 12.7%, and market share was 30.7%. Excluding minivehicles, sales were 1,258,675, down 12.6%, with 49.1% market share. The year-over-year declines are supplied by Toyota’s annual results; they should not be compared with the 2024 Toyota-and-Lexus regional total without accounting for brand scope and period.
The first half of 2021 provides a shorter-period signal. Toyota Japan sales including minivehicles were 815,863 vehicles from January through June, up 14.8%. Market share was 33.1% including minivehicles and 52.3% excluding them. Toyota describes inside-Japan sales as registrations plus notifications, another reason to keep the measurement definition attached to the number.
Overseas sales and exports
Toyota reports outside-Japan sales separately from exports from Japan. Toyota brand sales outside Japan reached 8,139,021 vehicles in 2021, up 13.2%, and 8,277,829 in 2022, up 1.7%. On the consolidated basis, outside-Japan sales were 8,386,738 vehicles in 2021, up 13.8%, and 8,576,566 in 2022, up 2.3%. The consolidated figures include Daihatsu and Hino. These results are documented in Toyota’s 2021 and 2022 annual sales reports.
For the first half of 2021, Toyota brand sales outside Japan were 4,188,762 vehicles, up 36.9%. Consolidated outside-Japan sales were 4,302,052, up 36.5%, again including Daihatsu and Hino. The component figures show why consolidated outside-Japan sales cannot be assigned entirely to the Toyota brand: Daihatsu outside-Japan sales were 152,440 vehicles in 2021 and 189,906 in 2022, while Hino recorded 95,277 and 108,831 respectively.
Exports from Japan are a different channel measure. Toyota exported 1,757,340 vehicles from Japan in 2021, up 0.5%, and 1,668,522 in 2022, down 5.1%. Exports are not equivalent to all sales outside Japan, and outside-Japan definitions vary by country or region. The supplied Toyota definitions therefore support reporting these measures side by side, not combining them into one total or treating exports as a complete explanation of overseas sales.
Electrified-vehicle adoption and measured outcomes
Electrified vehicles represented approximately 20% of Toyota’s global sales in 2019 and approximately 23% in 2020. In the first half of 2021, they represented approximately 26% of global sales, up from approximately 21% in the first half of 2020. These are observed proportions reported by Toyota, but the percentages are rounded and should not be converted into exact vehicle counts without additional data.
Toyota and Lexus cumulative electrified-vehicle sales reached 27.01 million units worldwide by March 2024. Toyota also attributed 197 million tons of cumulative CO2 reduction to its electrified vehicles by that date. The CO2 figure is Toyota’s reported estimate of cumulative effect, not a directly observed emissions meter reading. Both figures are reported in Toyota’s Cumulative Sales of Electrified Vehicles.
The adoption measures answer different questions. The 2019-to-2021 percentages describe electrified vehicles as a share of sales during specific periods. The 27.01 million figure is cumulative volume through March 2024. The 197 million-ton figure is a company-reported cumulative estimate. Keeping those units and measurement types separate prevents a share, a stock, and an estimated outcome from being presented as if they were the same statistic.
Monthly, quarterly, and model-level sales signals
Monthly results show how Toyota’s annual performance can be built from changing short-term periods. Toyota brand worldwide sales were 915,774 vehicles in December 2020, up 10.3%; 851,241 in December 2021, down 7.0%; and 839,299 in December 2022, down 1.4%. Consolidated December sales were 987,689 in 2020, 933,260 in 2021, and 917,747 in 2022. Those consolidated monthly figures include Daihatsu and Hino.
Toyota global sales rose 6.8% year over year in the October-to-December quarter of 2020. In the first half of 2021, Toyota brand worldwide sales reached 5,004,625 vehicles, up 32.7% from 2020 and 4.5% from 2019. Consolidated worldwide sales reached 5,467,218, up 31.3%, with Daihatsu and Hino included. The corresponding official source is Sales, Production, and Export Results for the First Half of 2021.
Model-level data identifies the RAV4 as Toyota’s best-selling vehicle in 2020, with global sales of 994,000 units, up 2.9%. RAV4 sales in China reached 175,000 units that year, up 37.9%. These figures describe one model and one calendar year; they do not establish a global model ranking for later periods.
For a more recent partial-year signal, Toyota worldwide sales were 921,308 vehicles in September 2023, up 11.6%. From January through September 2023, worldwide sales reached 7,571,733 vehicles, up 6.7%. Toyota reports these figures in Sales, Production, and Export Results for the First Half (April-September) of FY2024. The period label matters: the table reports January-to-September results alongside a fiscal-year heading, so it should not be read as a full fiscal-year total.
