Global Toyota Hybrid Sales Scale and Powertrain Mix
Toyota’s fiscal 2025 Integrated Report separates HEVs from plug-in hybrids, battery-electric vehicles, fuel-cell vehicles and internal-combustion vehicles. The global total was 10,274 thousand Toyota and Lexus vehicles, with 4,441 thousand classified as HEVs, so the report’s 43% HEV share is a company-reported powertrain mix rather than a count of all electrified vehicles.
| Powertrain or total | Fiscal 2025 global sales | Definition |
|---|---|---|
| Internal combustion | 5,526 thousand | Toyota’s ICE classification |
| HEV | 4,441 thousand | Conventional hybrid-electric vehicles |
| PHEV | 161 thousand | Plug-in hybrids, separate from HEVs |
| BEV | 145 thousand | Battery-electric vehicles |
| FCEV | 1 thousand | Fuel-cell electric vehicles |
| All Toyota and Lexus vehicles | 10,274 thousand | Includes all listed powertrains |

The same report’s series table gives scale for several major nameplates, but these figures are not hybrid-only sales. The Corolla series sold 1,661 thousand vehicles globally, the RAV4 series sold 1,047 thousand, and the Yaris series sold 908 thousand in fiscal 2025.
Other global series totals were 591 thousand for Camry, 323 thousand for Highlander, 278 thousand for Sienna, 224 thousand for Lexus RX and 210 thousand for Innova. These totals describe series sales across available powertrains, so they should not be read as individual hybrid counts.
Toyota Hybrid Statistics by Region: Europe, Japan and North America
Regional adoption is uneven. Toyota’s fiscal 2025 tables show the highest HEV share among the three named markets in Europe, while North America had the largest absolute HEV sales total.
| Region | HEV sales | Total Toyota and Lexus sales | HEV share | Electrification rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Europe | 776 thousand | 1,165 thousand | 67% | 76% |
| Japan | 912 thousand | 1,505 thousand | 61% | 62% |
| North America | 1,146 thousand | 2,731 thousand | 42% | Not stated in supplied regional facts |
Source: Toyota Integrated Report 2025.
Europe’s 776 thousand HEVs represented 67% of 1,165 thousand total Toyota and Lexus sales in fiscal 2025. Toyota’s broader electrification rate was 76%, defined as HEV+PHEV+BEV+FCEV, so it is not interchangeable with the HEV share.
Japan recorded 912 thousand HEV sales out of 1,505 thousand total Toyota and Lexus vehicles, producing a 61% HEV share. Its electrification rate was 62% under Toyota’s broader definition, which includes powertrains beyond conventional hybrids.
North America recorded 1,146 thousand HEV sales from 2,731 thousand total Toyota and Lexus vehicles. The 42% regional HEV share is lower than Europe’s and Japan’s, but North America’s absolute HEV volume was higher than either region in the fiscal-year table.
Toyota Hybrid Data Across Asia and Major Nameplates
Asia excluding China had a different profile in fiscal 2025. Toyota reported 363 thousand HEV sales from 1,451 thousand total Toyota and Lexus vehicles, making HEVs 25% of the regional total; the reported electrification rate was also 25% under the HEV+PHEV+BEV+FCEV definition.
| Asia excluding China measure | Fiscal 2025 result |
|---|---|
| Total Toyota and Lexus sales | 1,451 thousand |
| HEV sales | 363 thousand |
| HEV share | 25% |
| Electrification rate | 25% |
| Urban Cruiser Hyryder series sales | 62 thousand |
| Innova series sales | 206 thousand |

The Urban Cruiser Hyryder series sold 62 thousand vehicles in Asia excluding China, while the Innova series sold 206 thousand. Both are series totals rather than hybrid-only results, even when a series includes hybrid variants.
Japan’s series figures included 172 thousand Yaris vehicles and 80 thousand Prius vehicles in fiscal 2025. North America recorded 569 thousand RAV4 series vehicles and 314 thousand Camry series vehicles in the same period; these nameplate totals also cover available powertrains rather than isolating hybrid trims.
Toyota Hybrid Sales Trends in the United States
Toyota Motor North America’s calendar-year U.S. releases use the term electrified for a broader group that includes hybrids, plug-in hybrids, battery-electric vehicles and fuel-cell vehicles. The category therefore provides an adoption signal for Toyota’s wider electrified portfolio, but it cannot be relabeled as HEV-only sales.
Toyota and Lexus sold 2,332,623 vehicles in the United States in 2024, up 3.7% by volume from 2023. Electrified vehicles accounted for 1,006,461 of those 2024 sales, or 43.1%, and electrified sales increased 53.1% versus 2023.
| U.S. company-reported measure | 2024 | 2023 |
|---|---|---|
| Toyota and Lexus electrified vehicles | 1,006,461 | 657,327 |
| Electrified share of Toyota and Lexus sales | 43.1% | 29.2% |
| Toyota Division electrified vehicles | Not stated in supplied 2024 facts | 565,800 |
| Toyota and Lexus dealership electrified offerings | 30 | Not stated |
Sources: Toyota Motor North America Reports 2024 U.S. Sales Results and Toyota Motor North America Reports 2023 U.S. Sales Results.
The 2023 release reported 657,327 Toyota and Lexus electrified vehicles, representing 29.2% of U.S. sales. Toyota Division alone sold 565,800 electrified vehicles, equal to 29.3% of its U.S. sales, but that division figure excludes Lexus and still includes non-hybrid electrified types.
Quarterly and monthly comparisons also show rapid movement in the broader category. Toyota and Lexus fourth-quarter 2023 electrified sales increased 60.9% year over year, Toyota Division fourth-quarter electrified sales increased 56.4%, and Toyota Division December electrified sales increased 59.4%.
The 2024 U.S. dealership network offered 30 electrified vehicle offerings across Toyota and Lexus. That availability count combines conventional hybrids with other electrified types, so it measures portfolio breadth rather than the number of hybrid models alone.
Toyota Hybrid History, Cumulative Sales and Measured Outcomes
Toyota’s historical hybrid milestone is separate from its current fiscal-year sales reporting. Toyota stated that cumulative global hybrid passenger-vehicle sales reached 10,047.6 thousand units by January 31, 2017, and labeled the sales results preliminary and subject to change.
| Hybrid model or group | Cumulative global sales through January 31, 2017 |
|---|---|
| Prius | 3,984.6 thousand |
| Aqua/Prius c | 1,380.1 thousand |
| Camry Hybrid | 614.7 thousand |
| Auris Hybrid | 378.0 thousand |
| Vitz/Yaris Hybrid | 302.7 thousand |
| Highlander/Kluger Hybrid | 156.3 thousand |
| RAV4 Hybrid | 109.7 thousand |

These model figures are historical cumulative totals, not current totals. They also cover named hybrid models, unlike the fiscal 2025 global series table, which reports series sales without restricting them to hybrid variants.
Toyota’s 2022 management-policy announcement reported 22.5 million cumulative global electrified-vehicle sales. Because Toyota’s electrified category includes more than conventional HEVs, this figure should not be presented as a replacement for the 2017 hybrid-only milestone or compared with the fiscal 2025 HEV count without preserving the category definitions.
Toyota estimated that the CO2-emissions reduction associated with those 22.5 million electrified vehicles was equivalent to approximately 7.5 million battery-electric vehicles. This is Toyota’s equivalence estimate, not a directly measured count of BEVs deployed, and the announcement provides limited calculation detail.
The same announcement stated that hybrid-system cost had fallen to one-sixth of its original cost by the time of the 2022 announcement. Toyota did not specify the original-cost baseline or calculation details on the cited page, so the figure is best treated as a company statement rather than an independently verified cost series.
