58 Hybrid Car Statistics on Sales, Adoption and Technology

Hybrid cars occupy a large and varied part of the transition away from conventional internal-combustion vehicles. The figures below distinguish conventional hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), battery-electric vehicles (BEVs), company sales and wider market estimates.

Toyota’s fiscal 2025 results provide a clearly defined company-level view of hybrid scale. Toyota reported 10.274 million total vehicle sales worldwide, including 4.441 million HEVs, 161,000 PHEVs and 145,000 BEVs.

The 4.441 million HEVs represented 43% of Toyota’s global vehicle sales. These are Toyota sales statistics, not a complete count of every hybrid sold by every manufacturer. Toyota Integrated Report 2025

The wider market figures use different definitions:

  • The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimated that electric and hybrid cars together made up about 30% of global car sales in 2024.
  • Global car sales approached 80 million vehicles in 2024.
  • Global pure-ICE car sales were 30% below their 2017 peak by 2024; this is a comparison for the global car market, not a hybrid-only sales measure.

The IEA groups electric and hybrid cars in the first 2024 measure, so it should not be read as a standalone conventional-HEV share. IEA, What Next for the Global Car Industry

Toyota Hybrid Sales by Region

Toyota’s regional fiscal 2025 sales show how hybrid adoption differs across its own markets.

Toyota sales population, fiscal 2025 HEV sales HEV share
Europe 776,000 67%
Japan 912,000 61%
North America 1.146 million 42%
China 844,000 47%
Asia excluding China 363,000 25%
Other Toyota markets 400,000 24%

North America had the largest HEV volume among the listed regions at 1.146 million vehicles, while Europe had the highest HEV share at 67%. The regional denominators are Toyota sales populations, and the “Other” category is Toyota’s residual regional classification.

Toyota’s regional HEV counts and shares come from the company’s fiscal 2025 sales tables. Toyota Integrated Report 2025

Hybrid Market Shares and Toyota Electrification Rates

Toyota’s electrification rate combines HEVs, PHEVs and BEVs, so it is broader than the HEV share alone. In fiscal 2025, Toyota reported a 76% electrification rate in Europe, 62% in Japan, 51% in China, 46% in North America, and 25% in both Asia excluding China and its Other markets.

Toyota region, fiscal 2025 HEV share PHEV share BEV share Electrification rate
Europe 67% 5.3% 3.6% 76%
Japan 61% 1.2% 0.1% 62%
North America 42% 2.7% 1.4% 46%
China 47% 0.2% 3.3% 51%
Asia excluding China 25% 0.2% 0.1% 25%

The table uses Toyota-reported rounded percentages. The electrification-rate measure includes powertrains that are not conventional HEVs, and the regional shares use Toyota’s own sales denominators. Toyota Integrated Report 2025

Hybrid Powertrain Mix and Vehicle Technology Data

Toyota’s global fiscal 2025 powertrain mix included 5.526 million ICE vehicles and 1,000 fuel-cell vehicles alongside the electrified categories. The company also reported regional HEV volumes against total vehicle sales.

Toyota region, fiscal 2025 Total Toyota sales HEV sales
Global 10.274 million 4.441 million
North America 2.731 million 1.146 million
Japan 1.505 million 912,000
Europe 1.165 million 776,000
China 1.789 million 844,000
Asia excluding China 1.451 million 363,000
Other markets 1.632 million 400,000

Toyota’s cumulative electrified-vehicle sales reached 25.99 million units through December 31, 2023. In that company definition, electrified vehicles include HEVs, PHEVs, BEVs and fuel-cell electric vehicles, so the cumulative figure is not a conventional-hybrid-only total.

Toyota also reported that the cost of its HEV system had fallen to one-sixth of the original cost by the fifth generation introduced in 2022. This is a company comparison of HEV-system cost across generations, not a consumer purchase price or a directly comparable ownership-cost estimate. Toyota Integrated Report 2025

EPA data provide a separate view of hybrid technology in the United States. In preliminary model year 2024 data, hybrids had a 7.2% production share of new light-duty vehicles, while mild hybrids had a 4.9% share and PHEVs had a 1.7% share.

The categories are separate in the EPA production-share table. The 2024 values are preliminary estimates, and the hybrid production share should not be treated as a registered-sales share.

EPA’s hybrid stop/start technology penetration rate was 49.2% in model year 2023 and 55.0% in preliminary model year 2024 data. This comparison concerns new gasoline-engine vehicles in the EPA report and includes hybrids and PHEVs for the technology measure, so it is not an HEV sales statistic.

The EPA report also identifies hybrid-powered vehicles among its highest real-world fuel-economy vehicles:

  • The highest-real-world-fuel-economy vehicle in the report reached 57.4 estimated real-world combined mpg in model year 2000.
  • The corresponding highest value reached 53.3 estimated real-world combined mpg in model year 2005.

These are EPA estimated real-world values rather than window-sticker ratings. 2024 EPA Automotive Trends Report

Hybrid Adoption and Electric-Car Comparisons

U.S. HEV sales grew 53% from 2022 to 2023 and reached nearly 1.2 million vehicles in 2023. The U.S. Department of Energy reports these as national HEV sales figures, separate from Toyota’s company sales. U.S. Department of Energy, FOTW #1343

Electric-car measures help describe the adjacent plug-in market, but they do not replace conventional-hybrid statistics. The IEA’s electric-car category includes BEVs and PHEVs and excludes conventional non-plug-in HEVs.

Electric-car measure Period and geography Reported result
Electric-car sales Global, 2023 Almost 14 million
Year-over-year electric-car sales growth Global, 2022–2023 35%
Electric share of car sales Global, 2023 About 18%
Electric share of car sales Global, 2022 14%
Electric-car stock Global, end of 2023 40 million
Battery-electric share of electric stock Global, 2023 70%

About 95% of global electric-car sales in 2023 occurred in China, Europe and the United States. The IEA projected around 17 million electric-car sales worldwide in 2024, more than 20% above 2023, based on first-quarter trends and seasonality; that figure was a forecast, not a finalized observed total.

Regional plug-in growth also differed: China’s PHEV sales rose about 75% year over year in the first quarter of 2024 versus 15% for BEVs, while U.S. PHEV sales grew about 50% year over year in the same comparison. These are PHEV and BEV measures, not conventional-HEV sales. IEA, Global EV Outlook 2024
