Japanese Automotive Industry Statistics: Economic Scale, Investment and Employment

The Japanese automotive sector is substantial relative to both manufacturing and the wider economy. JAMA’s measure of automobile manufacturing shipments covers reported shipment-related revenues for establishments included in its source statistics.

Measure Period Japan result
Automobile manufacturing shipments 2023 ¥71.5991 trillion, up 14.0%
Share of all manufacturing shipments 2023 19.2%
Share of machinery-industry shipments 2023 42.0%
Automotive manufacturing investment FY2024 ¥1.5921 trillion
Automotive manufacturing R&D spending FY2023 ¥4.3387 trillion

Source: Automobile Manufacturing as a Core Industry. The investment share among major manufacturing industries was reported as more than 20% in FY2024, while the R&D share of the cited major-industry total was 30% in FY2023; both are rounded source presentations.

The employment footprint extends beyond factories. JAMA estimated approximately 5.59 million people in 2024 across automotive-related material supply, manufacturing, sales, maintenance and transport, combining several official datasets; this is an estimate rather than a single establishment census.

Trade.gov classified automotive manufacturing as 2.9% of Japan’s GDP in 2024 and 13.9% of manufacturing GDP. These percentages use the source’s automotive-manufacturing classification and manufacturing-GDP denominator, respectively.

See Japan – Automotive.

Japan’s 2024 production total shows contraction across the principal four-wheeled categories. The figures use JAMA’s Japanese road-vehicle classifications.

Vehicle type 2024 production Year over year
Four-wheeled vehicles 8.235 million -8.5%
Passenger cars 7.139 million -8.1%
Ordinary passenger cars 4.752 million -5.5%
Small four-wheel passenger cars 1.133 million -14.9%
Kei passenger cars 1.255 million -11.0%
Trucks 995,000 -11.8%
Buses 101,000 -4.3%

Source: Four-Wheeled Vehicles. The four-wheeled total follows the source’s road-vehicle classification, and the passenger-car total includes ordinary, small four-wheel and kei categories.

The category pattern matters because the decline was not uniform. Ordinary passenger-car production fell 5.5%, while small four-wheel production fell 14.9%; kei production fell 11.0%, and truck production fell 11.8%.

The source also provides an approximate comparison value of about 8.999 million four-wheeled vehicles for 2023, obtained by reversing the published 8.5% decline from the 2024 total. That is a simple derived context figure, not a separately reported production count.

Japanese Automotive Sales Statistics: Passenger Cars, Trucks and Imports

Domestic new-vehicle sales were lower in most major categories in 2024, although buses and imported vehicles moved differently. Japan’s new four-wheeled sales total includes imported vehicles and excludes large special vehicles where the source specifies that limitation.

Category 2024 sales Year over year
New four-wheeled vehicles 4.421 million -7.5%
Passenger cars 3.725 million -6.7%
Ordinary passenger cars 1.756 million -0.1%
Small four-wheel passenger cars 768,000 -14.1%
Kei passenger cars 1.202 million -10.4%
Trucks 686,000 -11.8%
Buses 10,097 +20.1%

Source: Four-Wheeled Vehicles. Special-purpose vehicles are included in trucks according to the source note.

Import activity added a separate dimension to the market:

  • Imported four-wheeled vehicle sales reached 321,000 in 2024, up 3.0%; imported passenger-car sales reached 301,000, up 8.6%.
  • Imported commercial-vehicle sales were 20,000 in 2024, down 42.4%; this category combines trucks and buses.
  • Imported used-vehicle sales were 561,000 in 2024, up 0.9%, including 539,000 imported used passenger cars, up 1.1%.

These import figures are reported in the JAMA summary using imported-vehicle data from the Japan Automobile Importers Association. Used imports are separate from new-vehicle sales.

Japanese Automotive Electrification Statistics: Hybrids, EVs and Powertrains

Japan’s 2024 new-vehicle market was strongly hybrid-oriented, while the reported EV category remained much smaller. The categories come from the Trade.gov market summary, which attributes its series to JAMA, JADA, Zenkeijikyo and Nikkan Jidosha Shimbun.

Powertrain measure Period Result
Hybrid-vehicle sales 2024 2,040,181
Hybrid share of new passenger-car sales 2024 54.8%
New EV sales 2024 59,736, down 32.5%
EV share of new vehicles sold 2024 1.35%

Source: Japan – Automotive. The hybrid share applies to passenger cars, whereas the EV share is stated for new vehicles; the two denominators should not be merged.

The historical series shows movement before the 2024 change. Japan’s new-vehicle sales totaled 4,448,340 in 2021, 4,201,320 in 2022 and 4,779,086 in 2023.

Hybrid sales rose from 1,441,487 in 2021 to 1,868,625 in 2023, while EV sales rose from 21,693 to 88,535 over the same endpoints before falling in 2024.

The source-defined EV category should also be kept separate from Toyota’s own powertrain taxonomy or any battery-electric-only measure. These figures describe annual sales and shares, not charging infrastructure, vehicle ownership or a causal explanation for the year-over-year changes.

Japanese Automotive Trade Statistics: Exports, Imports and Overseas Production

Automotive trade remained a major external-facing part of Japan’s economy in 2024. JAMA reported automotive exports of ¥22.5 trillion, up 3.8%, on an FOB export-value basis, and automotive imports of ¥3.3 trillion, down 0.7%, on a CIF import-value basis.

Using those rounded published values, the export value was approximately 6.8 times the import value. This is a derived ratio from rounded figures, not an independently reported trade statistic.

Trade measure Period Result
Automotive exports 2024 ¥22.5 trillion, +3.8%
Automotive imports 2024 ¥3.3 trillion, -0.7%
Japan total exports, all goods 2024 +6.2%
Japan total imports, all goods 2024 +2.1%
Vehicle exports by count 2023 4.42 million, +16%

Sources: Automobile Manufacturing as a Core Industry and Four-Wheeled Vehicles. The all-goods export and import changes are contextual comparisons, not automotive-only results, and vehicle-export counts should not be equated with export value.

The export-count measure covers Japan’s 2023 vehicle exports, while the value measures cover 2024 automotive trade. Keeping the measurement year and unit visible prevents the two forms of trade data from being treated as interchangeable.

Toyota Statistics Within the Japanese Automotive Industry

Toyota is a major Japanese manufacturer, but the company figures below are worldwide consolidated statistics and therefore should not be compared directly with Japan-only industry totals without that distinction.

Toyota measure Period or date Worldwide or Japan result
Vehicle production FY2025 9,049,063 worldwide
Vehicle sales FY2025 9,362,410 worldwide
Employees End of March 2025 383,853 worldwide
Japan production bases or manufacturing companies End of March 2025 16 in Japan
Japan R&D sites End of March 2025 8 in Japan

Source: Toyota Integrated Report 2025. The production-base and R&D-site counts describe network scale, not vehicle output or R&D spending.

Toyota’s fiscal 2025 consolidated vehicle sales were 9.362 million units, 81,000 below the prior year. Consolidated sales revenue was ¥48.0367 trillion, up ¥2.9413 trillion year over year; this is company revenue, not Japanese automotive-industry revenue.

The company reported fiscal 2025 R&D expense of ¥1.3264 trillion, up ¥124.0 billion, and capital expenditures of ¥2.1348 trillion, also up ¥124.0 billion. Both are worldwide consolidated company measures, so they should remain separate from Japan’s FY2023 industry R&D statistic and FY2024 industry investment statistic.
